Raised Beds Growing!

The Jack Simpson Garden is located at the Jack Simpson and Walnut Village Apartments, a low-income senior residency managed by the Rural Communities Housing and Development Corporation (RCHDC), a non-profit that provides affordable housing to low and moderate income persons. The garden is a collaboration of The Gardens Project and RCHDC residents and provides access to fresh fruits and vegetables for the low-income senior residents.

Special modifications for the senior residents have been implemented in this garden.  These considerations include beds that are raised for wheelchair access and ‘no-bending’ gardening. The garden's initial 25 plots will be accessible to the 30 units in the Jack Simpson senior apartments as well as the neighboring RCHDC senior complex of Walnut Village with 48 units.

In addition to the numerous businesses and volunteers that helped develop this garden, special thanks go to The Gardens Project Sponsors -  The Ukiah Natural Foods Coop and The Community Foundation of Mendocino County for their financial support, as well as the California Conservation Corps for their tremendous contribution of skilled workers!
